Leigh's London Marathon Experience

Flora London Marathon 2009

My training started back in October 2008. Everything went well until February 2009 when my first attempt at 20 miles sent my calf muscles in spasms and I couldn't run for 3 weeks. Panic set in! However, slowly and surely I started back up again spurred on by all the support I was receiving.
I was overwhelmed at the generousity of friends and family donating to my chosen charity the Niemann-Pick Disease Group (UK). Early on I decided to run for Niemann Pick as my great friend Sue Lowe is very involved with this Charity.
Everyone that donated
asked me about Niemann-Pick disease and I felt proud to raise the awareness of the
disease. An example of this was when several colleagues/friends presented me
with a newspaper article on the Hempel family which highlighted the story of
twins Addison and Cassie as they had recognised Niemann-Pick disease from donating on my
Just Giving site. I felt extremely touched by this.
The marathon was an amazing experience. The crowds spur you on and keep you
going when you feel like your legs have nothing else to offer. It was a very hot
day but I loved every minute of the run and when I crossed the finishing line
and collected my medal I have to admit to shedding a tear or two. I felt
overcome with emotion.
I am proud to have run for such a worthy cause as The Niemann-Pick Disease Group (UK). People told me I was brave to run the marathon but the people that suffer from this disease are far braver than me. God Bless You All.
